Can Google Gemini Write Fiction (Honest Review)

In this post, I‘ll test Gemini, Google’s AI assistant.

It’s a multimodal LLM, meaning it can be utilized for creating text, images, handling audio, and videos. I’m testing out to see how suitable Gemini is for AI-assisted fiction writing.

Let’s dive in!

And you should arrive here.

My Results

As I wanted to test the fiction writing properties of Gemini, I asked it to write about our familiar Labrador puppy Nakki.

Unlike some other tools I’ve tested, which first brainstormed ideas with me, Gemini just started to write the story for me immediately.

Seems promising, the narration and description in the text are very artistic and detailed.

I tested different prompts to see how Gemini would change the story.

The language is definitely not what I’m used to AI text being like.

Usually it lacks persona and is very general, but here there’s even a bit too much metaphorical imagery, for example these are pretty wild:

Error in the Database of Reality.
concentration of anti-light.
Tears of Endless Salt.

Gemini has been criticized before for lacking imagination, but I disagree, based on my test.

Pros

  • Can generate creative and human-like text
  • Chat-based, conversational AI
  • Can be integrated with other Google products

Cons

  • Not specifically for fictional writing

Here are the pricing plans for individual; they also offer plans for Business and Enterprise.

To Take Home

I was pleased with my writing experience with Gemini.

I’ve seen it getting some criticism before for lacking imagination, but that wasn’t the case.

It wrote a creative, smooth story for me and adjusted it according to my prompts.

With even more detailed prompts or by adding some of your own text, you can write even more personalized text that matches your own writing style.

As Gemini is not specifically designed for fiction writing, it lacks some writing-specific features like keeping track of storylines and characters.
