Building an AI Agent Step by Step
To create your AI agent in Botpress, visit this page and start your free trial.
Next, sign up.
You can use your Google account to make it easier and avoid remembering another password!
Answer a few basic questions about your business and how you plan to use the AI.
(This helps the platform understand what kind of AI agents you need and what to focus on.)
Once you’re on the dashboard, click “Create Bot” to start building your AI agent.
Give your AI agent a name. I named mine Blogging Assistant.
Your AI agent is now created. It’s really that easy—these platforms make it simple.
But right now, your AI agent doesn’t do much. It’s just a placeholder. We need to teach it to do something useful.
To start customizing your bot, click “Open in Studio.”
This will open the template gallery. Choose one that matches your use case.
I used the Quick Start template to build a customer support bot, similar to one I made before.
Next, decide what your AI agent should do for your users.
I set mine up as a Blogging Assistant that pulls information from my website to help bloggers.
I told the AI not to make up answers or search the internet—I only want it to use my information.
That’s because a lot of websites don’t have accurate advice on blogging and SEO. Many sources are outdated, biased, or just plain wrong. I want the AI to stick to information I know is correct, relevant, and useful.
To train the bot with a specific data source, choose a knowledge base.
This is where you tell the AI where to look for answers, whether it’s for customer questions or internal company data.
This way, when someone asks the AI a question, it gets answers from the right place—whether that’s company documents, internal reports, or another verified source.
That keeps the responses consistent, reliable, and based on real information, instead of making things up or pulling from random, questionable sites.
I’m using my website, bloggersgoto.com, as the source for answering my support requests.
After you add your site to Botpress, it needs a few minutes to analyze it. I have about 150 blog posts, and it took around 3–5 minutes for the AI to scan and process everything.
You can edit your AI agent’s flow if you want.
I recommend doing this to give your AI agent a more personal touch and make it match your goals.
For example, the default flow comes with a Web Search card.
I removed it because I want my AI to use only my website. Otherwise, it could give generic answers or make things up.
When you’re ready, don’t forget to test your AI agent using the panel on the right-hand side.
I’m testing the AI here to show what this tool can really do.
For example, below I asked it what the best free AI headshot generator is, using the information I’ve shared on my site.
It gave me the perfect answer!
The AI pulled information straight from my site and even included references. It showed me the exact page with the info I needed.
That’s awesome! But sometimes it doesn’t get it right. It might say it can’t find something, even if it’s clearly on the site.
Once you’ve tested your bot and adjusted the style, colors, and personality, it’s time to go live. Just click “Publish.”
After publishing, you’ll get a link you can share.
I opened mine in a separate window using the public link. It shows the same AI agent chat view I had on the testing dashboard in Botpress.
