Building an AI Agent Step by Step
To build your AI agent in Botpress, go to this page and start your free trial.

Then sign up.
You can use Google to sign up to save you from having to remember yet another password!

Answer some simple questions about your use cases and your business.
(This lets the platform know what kinds of AI agents you’re after and what they should prioritize.)

Once you’re on the dashboard, click “Create Bot” to start building your AI agent.

Give your AI agent a name. I call mine a blogging assistant.

The AI agent is then created. This is literally how easy it is to create an AI agent. These platforms make it so simple.
However, at this point, your AI agent is not much of a use just yet. Now it’s just a placeholder that doesn’t do anything useful. So we need to teach it something useful!
To start making changes to your bot, click “Open in Studio.”

This opens the template gallery. Pick one that fits your use case.
I used the Quick Start template to build a customer support bot like the one I made before.

Next, define what your AI agent should do for your users.
I set mine up as a blogging assistant that pulls answers from my website to help bloggers.

I told it not to come up with the answers or use the internet — I just want it to use my information.
That’s because I think most websites don’t know what they’re talking about when it comes to blogging and SEO. In this space, a lot of sources are full of outdated, biased, or just flat-out wrong information. I don’t want the AI pulling in something unreliable. Instead, I want it to stick to what I give it — information that I know is accurate, relevant, and actually useful.
To use a specific data source to train the bot, choose a knowledge base.
This is the place where you tell the AI where it should look for information related to the customers’ questions or, for example, where it gets the internal data for you.

By doing this, I make sure that when someone asks the AI something, it’s pulling answers from the right place, whether that’s company documentation, internal reports, or any other verified source.
That way, it stays consistent, trustworthy, and aligned with the actual knowledge that matters, rather than making things up or pulling questionable data from random sites.
I will once again use my website, bloggersgoto.com, to answer my support requests.

After adding your site to Botpress, it takes some time to analyze. I have around 150 blog posts, and it took about 3–5 minutes for the AI to scan and process everything.

Edit your AI agent flow if you want to.

I recommend doing this to give it a more personalized touch and to align it with your goals.
For example, the default flow includes a Web Search card.

I removed it because I want my AI to rely only on my website. Otherwise, it might pull generic answers or make things up.
And when you’re ready, remember to test the AI agent on the right-hand side.

I’m testing the performance here to showcase what this tool is truly capable of.
For example, below I’ve asked the AI what is the best free AI headshot generator based on the information that I’ve shared on the site.

It gave me the perfect answer!
It pulled answers directly from my site and even provided references. It pointed me to the exact page that had the information I needed.

That’s epic! But sometimes, it misses the mark. It might say it can’t find information, even when it’s right there on the site.
Once you’ve tested your bot and fine-tuned the style, colors, and persona, it’s time to go live. Click “Publish.”

After publishing, you’ll get a shareable link to your bot.
Here, I opened mine in a separate window using the public link. It opens up the same AI agent chat view that I had on the testing dashboard on the Botpress site.
Isn’t that cool?

This is just scratching the surface of what Botpress can do.
There are so many customization options that I could spend all night going through them.

I hope this gave you a solid overview of how the bot works. This is how you make AI agents for your business.
Now it’s your turn! Try to repeat the steps I did in this guide for example on your website or data. Let me know in the comments how it goes.
