How to Screen Record With Internal Audio on Mac

Let me walk you through how to record your screen on a Mac with internal audio.

This isn’t a built-in feature, so you’ll need to spend about 5 minutes setting it up.

In this guide, I’ll show you how to do it step by step.

Step-by-Step Guide

#1 Install Blackhole

First, you need to install a free product called ExistentialAudio Blackhole.

You can do so here. Just scroll down to Installation Instructions and click Download the latest installer.

#2 Enter Your Email

Next, enter your email to receive the download link.

The link can take up to 15 minutes to arrive. (In the meantime, consider supporting this great project with a donation.)

#3 Install

Here’s what the download link email looks like:

Click the link to start the installation. Then select BlackHole 2ch to install the package on your Mac.

Now, click on the package you just installed:

Go through the installation wizard:

Then finish installing the software:

#4 Change Your AudioMidi Setup

After the installation is done, press Command + Space and type Audio MIDI Setup:

#5 Create Aggregate Devices

Next, create an aggregate device.

Click the + icon in the bottom left corner and choose Create Aggregate Device.

After the device is created, give it a name you’ll remember (double-click the name to edit it).

I named mine QuickTime Player Input.

Then, from the menu on the right, select the BlackHole installation:

Next, create another device—this time choose Multi-Output Device.

Rename this device to Screen Record with Audio.

For this device, select both Built-in Output and BlackHole from the menu on the right.

Make sure the order matches what I showed above. Built-in Output should be on top, with BlackHole below it. You can change the order by selecting and deselecting the devices.

Also, set the Primary Device to Built-in Output.

Here’s how your multi-output device settings should look:

#5 Change System Settings

Next, open your Mac’s System Settings.

Go to Sound and open the Output tab.

Now, set Screen Record with Audio as your output device.

#6 Change Screen Record Settings

Then open QuickTime Player and select Screen Recording.

Next, open the Screen Recording options and select the aggregate device you created earlier, QuickTime Player Input.

Now you’re all set. Start recording your screen, and it will capture the internal audio as well. This way you can, for example, record videos with sound.

#7 Reset the Changes

After you finish recording with internal audio, don’t forget to reset your settings.

Just switch the output back to your internal speakers or headphones.

You’ll find these settings under System Settings > Sound > Output. In my case, as shown in the screenshot above, I set the output device to my headset.
